Ducks Almost Washed Away; Community Saves Them

At 4:00 a.m. on February 3, 2019, a 1” pipe burst in a bathroom that was being remodeled in an effort to revitalize the center by its owners Nicole and David Richardson. This sizable flood was discovered at 7:30 a.m. by a family friend who was donating his time to work on a project in the center. The center’s usual opening time on a Sunday was 10:30 a.m.
After hurrying to the center and finding a significant amount of water rushing out of the front door and filling the 24 lane center, the owners posted an urgent call on the bowling center’s Facebook page for help from anyone in the community who could assist. Since wood is a vital part of a bowling center and Greenmount Bowl has twelve irreplaceable Sherman Duckpin pinsetters that haven’t been manufactured since the 1960’s, the rush of water being contained and cleaned up quickly was extremely important before irreversible damage was sustained that would force the center to close its doors forever.
Within 25 minutes of the call for help on Facebook, over 50 people from different walks of life arrived with pumps, mops, generators, fans, shop vacs, dehumidifiers, etc. and essentially saved the center from certain disaster. They spent hours helping to contain the water, and had the center drying out hours before the nearest water mitigation company could be on site. Many of those who answered the call were members of the community who had never even set foot in the doors, but who realized the importance of the bowling center in their community.
After only three days of drying out and repair, the center opened back up to the public on Wednesday, February 6th, better than ever.
In an age of hyper tribalism and division, the actions by various members of a small community highlighted the importance of a bowling center in a local community. Greenmount Bowl has become a place where Liberals, Conservatives, Hispanics, Caucasians, African-Americans, Religious, Non-Religious, etc come together regularly to celebrate a sense of community that binds them together, not harp on what divides them.
Greenmount Bowl is a 24-lane family entertainment facility consisting of 12 Duckpin Lanes and 12 Tenpin Lanes in Hampstead, MD. Owners Nicole and David Richardson are executives in the thoroughbred racing industry and were instrumental in the opening of Greenmount OTB facility next door to the bowling center.
Their son, Lucas, is a multiple state champion Duckpin bowler and was the impetus for the family purchasing the center in July 2017, the goal being to keep the center a part of the Northern Carroll County community and to provide Lucas and his friends a place to grow their love of the sport.
Eleven-year-old Lucas hosts a video podcast titled GBTV on the center’s Facebook page and YouTube where he interviews bowlers who have accomplished impressive feats within the sport of Duckpin and Tenpin bowling.
Sean McGraw Bowls 209 Game

On October 13 Sean McGraw, major division bowler at AMF Dundalk, bowled a 209 game. Sean had six strikes and two spares during his game. For his accomplishment Sean will receive a 4 strikes in a row patch, 5 marks in a row patch, +50 patch and a 200 game special award plaque.

White Oak Lanes Changes Ownership

Two things have been very synonymous in the duckpin industry for six decades — White Oak Lanes in Silver Spring, MD and its owner Ralph Curry. After 62 years of working in the duckpin game, Ralph sold his highly respected 24-lane center to George Sloan on February 12.
Ralph was a very active and leading proprietor, who held many offices in the association over the years. He was especially supportive of the NDYA program and the Pro Tours.
The Duckpin News discussed George’s entry into the duckpin bowling business.
Q. What motivated you to buy the business?
A. Keeping this game alive. I have been a bowler for the majority of my life and if White Oak were to close, I would more than likely have to give duckpins up as there are no bowling alleys very close to me.
Q. What is your background in duckpins?
A. I started bowling in an adult-youth league at 12 years old, joined a youth league at 14 and have bowled pretty much ever since (I'm 31 now). White Oak was also my first job. I started working here part time when i was 15 and still in high school. I have worked here about 12 years prior to buying it. My parents met here and both grandfathers were avid bowlers. My grandmother on my dad's side was a bowler as well.
Q. Are you looking forward to being a duckpin proprietor?
A. Absolutely! I get to be my own boss, work in the game that I love, and interact with hundreds of nice people everyday. Who wouldn't look forward to that?!

45th Annual NDYA National Tournament Set

The National Duckpin Youth Association has announced that its 45th Annual National Team Tournament will take place the weekend of June 29-30-July 1 at AMF Dundalk in Maryland.
Four-person team champions in the Prep, Bantam, Junior and Major divisions will advance to the Nationals from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Virginia and three regions in Maryland.
Additional tournament information, rules and entry forms will be available in January.

Mary Vest a Familiar Face on Duckpin Scene

Mary Vest, of Baltimore, has been coaching youth and running tournaments for close to 40 years. She is well known for her knowledge of the sport and her pleasant ways of working with youth bowlers. The Duckpin News recently interviewed Mary about her involvement with the NDYA.
Q. When did you get involved in youth duckpin bowling?
A. Not until I was about 14-15, around 1970.
Q. How did you get involved?
A. Friends. We would all go bowling and decided we liked it and joined the youth league at Westview bowling for Paul Schneider and Ron Zoebeck.
Q. What do you enjoy about coaching and working with the youth?
A. I’ve made some lifelong friends—it’s also great when you have little ones come running "Miss Mary, Miss Mary" and giving you hugs each time they see you.
Q. How long have you been a State Director?
A. I am not sure I have that title. I have worked with Paul, Dolly and Beth for years helping run the tournament once I got out of youth league myself and filled in the past couple of years for Paul.
Q. What will it take to get more people bowling duckpins?
A. It would help if the price was lower—I know that isn’t going to happen—but it’s still cheaper than other sports.
Q. What is your favorite memory of youth coaching?
A. The year that Westview actually won pee wees, preps, and bantams.
Q. Do you ever see bowlers you coached in past years in the community?
A. All the time. We actually have some of our old bowlers bringing their kids to bowl with us.
Q. Anything else you want to add?
A. It would be nice if AMF advertised duckpins once in a while. Some people think that there is only tenpins.

Parkville Lanes to Reopen
July 20, 2017
Parkville Lanes, a 26-lane center in Baltimore, is slated to reopen in early August. The center closed last fall due to physical plant problems. Four long-time customers of the center — Chris Roth, Christopher Jacobs, Steven Rowley and Carmelo Chiedi — acquired the business.
“Parkville was one of our favorite houses to bowl in. We heard that we may be able to rescue it so we did. All four of us love duckpin bowling and want to do our part to save the game,” stated Roth.

- Cora Byrd and Darlene Edwards, both of MD, set a NDBC world record for team average with 273.69 in the White Oak Lanes Doubles League. The previous record was 255.83.
- Mindy Thomas and Billy Thomas became the first sister and brother to win the Youth Invitational. The 20th annual event took place July 20-27 in the Baltimore/Washington area.

Duckpin Bowling Affected His Life

Mr. Ferry might remember me. My name is Mark Clarke and I bowled for years at his establishment Town Hall Lanes in Johnston, RI. I wanted to take a moment to share how this organization changed my life.
I started bowling with my Dad in 1965 at the Attleboro Bowladrome. I was 7 years old....a fat, uncoordinated kid who had terrible motor skills and was pretty much laughed at and picked on. It was thought I would never be really good at anything physical. As time went on I found out that I liked duckpins and was getting pretty good at it. I bowled youth league but there was no real organization. Everything was strictly local based.
My skills improved and in 1973 at age 15 we were told there was now a national organization where we could win awards and be recognized. Through the season I most likely drove my coaches crazy sending in for awards and my Mom busy sewing them on my shirt. Most important I was gaining confidence that the kid nobody wanted in gym class could be at the top of a game.
At the End of the season we were told there would be a Massachusetts State Tournament where the winning team would represent the state at a National Tournament in Washington, D.C. Our team was formed which I was named Captain. When it was over our team tied another team. After two days of checking we were declared the winners due to an over age member on the opposing team. From uncoordinated kid to State Team Champion my name got known and I broke out of my shell. We didn't do well at Nationals but I did have the highest three game set for the state of Massachusetts.
To shorten this up greatly I went on to bowl on the Pro Tour for a few years and was ranked in the top 10 average in R.I. two years. Duckpins and the NDYA changed my life and helped me to having a brief career hosting my own radio show in Providence. I wanted to share my story in the hope that someone else who felt as if did growing up will see there is something for them, too.
My state trophy is my most prized possession and I thank the NDYA for giving me the start I needed. Happy summer to all and continued success to the organization and it's members.

Team Iafolla Wins Inaugural $16,000 Preakness Duckpin Classic

HAMPSTEAD, MD- Team Iafolla (Regina Greco, Tony Iafolla, Bob Niedzwicki, George Conn, IV and Rob Stevens) posted a nail-biting 10th frame victory, 766-759, in the team championship portion of the $16,000 Preakness Duckpin Classic at Greenmount Bowl on May 14. The winning team took home a top prize of $5,000 and five Turfside Terrace tickets to Preakness and Black-Eyed Susan days for their efforts.
Team Ball (Steven Hoover, Eric Ball, Will Cook, Patrick Sortino and Jeff Francis) banked $2,500 for finishing second.
The two finalist teams were tied with two bowlers each remaining in the final frame however Team Iafolla was able to squeak out a thrilling last second victory with a clutch strike and ten count by Conn and a conveniently-timed four pin spare by Stevens to win by seven pins.
This championship match and each preliminary contest in the head-to-head round can be viewed in its entirety at Duckpin TV.
The individual portion of the event was won by Colton Gue who defeated Randy Farlow by a score of 173-152 on Saturday evening at Mt. Airy Lanes before a raucous crowd. Gue took home a top prize of $1,000 and two Turfside Terrace tickets to Preakness and Black-Eyed Susan for his victory while Farlow banked $500 for second.
The individual championship and preliminary matches can also be viewed on Duckpin TV.
A total of 24 teams of five competed in this inaugural event over three days at Mt. Airy Lanes and Greenmount Bowl to rave reviews. The event attracted bowlers from Maryland, Connecticut, Washington DC, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
“This weekend was honestly the most exciting duckpin event I have ever been a part of,” commented participant Stacey Pickett. “The event’s format allows lower average bowlers the ability to compete at the highest level and the connection with horse racing was a really fun and creative component."
The Preakness Duckpin Classic was a hybrid 80% handicap tournament where bowlers competed in both an individual and team portion simultaneously. Each portion was split into two separate conferences named after Preakness winners Smarty Jones and American Pharaoh. The top individual bowlers competed in a single elimination tournament on Saturday evening at Mt. Airy Lanes.
The top eight teams competed against each other at Greenmount Bowl on Sunday morning.
Famed duckpinner Joe Rineer provided expert color commentary for the Duckpin TV broadcasts reminiscent of his appearances on various Duckpin television shows in the 1980’s and early 90’s. Rineer joined Pat Ruffo, Billy Koontz and Jim Kauffman in the coverage.
Organizers wish to sincerely thank all participants and fans for a successful first year event. It has been stated that if there is substantial interest next year, a third 12-lane duckpin house allowing 36 total teams to compete is a possibility.

2017 Preakness Duckpin Classic Is Ready To Break From The Starting Gate

Now that the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby is in the books with a thrilling win by the speedball colt Always Dreaming, it’s time to start dreaming about the 2017 Preakness Duckpin Classic. What better way to celebrate Maryland’s rich tradition of thoroughbred horse racing than with a fun and exciting competition in Maryland other tradition, Duckpin bowling.
We are looking forward to a great event of fun and bowling action at both Greenmount Bowl and Mt. Airy Lanes which beings Friday, May 12th.
Please find attached to this email a revised team lineup and flyer. If you’re bowling in this event, please be sure to be at either Greenmount Bowl or Mt. Airy Bowl no later than 6:20 on Friday evening to register for the event. The competition will start promptly at 7 pm. Check the flyer for your alley assignments and complete schedule.
An exciting update to the event is we we able to secure exclusive Turfside Terrace tickets to both Preakness and Black Eyed Susan days for the winning team and winner of the individual portion of this event. Men's Pro Tour Kicks Off 54th Season This Weekend

The Duckpin Professional Bowlers Association will get its 54th season rolling this weekend, April 28-29-30, at Highland Bowl in Cheshire, CT. The first of seven tour stops will feature a $2,200 first place prize. The defending Bowler of the Year is John Zikis. A new highlight on this year’s tour schedule is the June 16-17-18 stop at Meadowbrook Lanes in R.I. will allow women to enter.

- The NDBC announced its No. 1 ranked bowlers for the 2000-01 season — Theresa Vermillion of Harwood, MD was the No. 1 ranked woman for the second straight year with a 144.295 average and Greg Kraus of Bel Air, MD led the men with a 153.812 average for his first No. 1 title.
- The NDYA and the duckpin industry lost two key youth program leaders when Norm Fleury of R.I. passed away on October 25 and Ray Askew of VA passed away on August 9.
- Patty Palmer of Hampstead, MD won the WNDA Ladies Grand Prix at Suitland Bowl on November 17-18.
- Don Dove of Abingdon, MD won the DPBA Men’s Masters at AMF College Park on November 17-18.

Sandi Thomas: A Force On and Off the Lanes

Sandi Thomas has been a duckpin bowling leader in the Nutmeg state since she started bowling in her teens. She has enjoyed a solid career on the lanes and is a key proprietor in the duckpin industry. She entered the business 29 years ago as a part owner of Johnson’s Lanes in Hamden and assumed sole ownership 10 years ago. Sandi has worked hard to promote duckpin bowling and currently serves as a Board member of the Duckpin Bowling Proprietors of America and the National Duckpin Youth Association.
Some of her noted bowling accomplishments include six No.1 CT state rankings and 11 top twenty NDBC finishes. Her best season was 1993-94 when she averaged 144. Sandi has bowled eleven 200 games (225 high) and six 500 sets (538 high). She has won 32 tournaments, including three WNDA Pro Tour titles. She is a member of the Connecticut Duckpin, WNDA, and National Duckpin Bowling Congress Halls of Fame.
Is It Time for a Scoring Change?

Some people in the duckpin ranks feel the game needs some kind of boost to create more interest and participation. One way this could be achieved is to change the way the game is scored to create higher scores. Keep in mind that when duckpin bowling started, there was already a scorekeeping process for tenpins so duckpins followed their system. However, since duckpins was more difficult, a third ball was added, which created the possibility of scoring a 10 in a frame.
There has never been a 300 game bowled in duckpins, while there are thousands of perfect games bowled in tenpins each year. As long ago as 1962, the duckpin leaders gave thought to changing the scoring system to make the scores on par with tenpins. Following is an article from a 1962 Bowling Proprietors Association magazine, which proposed a new way to score duckpins. This was 11 years before a separate Duckpin Bowling Proprietors Association and NDYA program were formed. The scorekeeping change campaign was led by the Duckpin Bowling Council and National Duckpin Bowling Congress, at that time 35 years old.
The Duckpin News has no ensuing results of the test but it seems like an interesting concept. Maybe it’s time to revisit changing the sport by altering the scoring methodology.
Parkville Lanes Closes

Countless memories of fun and good times are being recalled in north Baltimore as Parkville Lanes announced it would not be reopening. The center had been closed recently due to ongoing HVAC problems and water damage to several lanes. A long time important fabric of their community, the owners and bowlers were lamenting the end of the business. Parkville Lanes was purchased 30 years ago by Edward Foreman, Brian Foreman, and Joe Closic. Parkville Lanes was a member of the Duckpin Bowling Proprietors Association and the association was planning on reaching out to help place the league bowlers at nearby DBPA member centers.

The Duckpin Bowling Proprietors Association of America held a meeting on Monday, October 24, in Atlantic City and enthusiasm still reigns among the owners. While various issues were discussed and the industry has shrunk over the years, those who still own and operate duckpin centers remain excited about the sport and what it has to offer.
DBPA Co-Presidents Ken Staub and Alyson Rineer Taylor led a close to two-hour meeting during which problems and opportunities were discussed. Recognizing that not every issue can be resolved immediately, the group felt the key focus should be on regional and national marketing to get more people bowling duckpins and help grow the game. Ken Staub, owner of Glen Burnie Bowl and Stoneleigh Lanes, can now boast a third duckpin center as the veteran owner assumed the management and ownership of Patterson Lanes in Baltimore, which has served the community since 1927. Ken looks forward to Patterson Lanes remaining a vital part of the community. The center has just become a member of the Duckpin Bowling Proprietors of America. Good luck to Ken in his new venture.

- Amy Bisson (now Sykes) led the nation in women’s averages for a fifth straight season with a 151.053 for the NDBC 2005-06 rankings. The second ranked bowler was Sharon Shipley, who averaged 139.235.
- 10 years after he achieved his first NDBC No. 1 men’s ranking, Don Dove was No. 1 again when his 152.219 average led the 2005-06 season.
- Kendra Boswell of Portsmouth, VA won the WNDA Ladies Grand Prix at AMF Eastpoint in Baltimore. It was her 8th pro tour title.
- Dennis Cabral of W. Warwick, R.I. won the DPBA Men’s Masters at AMF Westview in Baltimore, capturing his first championship.
- Kristy Kropfelder of Baltimore won the WNDA Tour stop at Pinland Lanes on September 2-3. It was Kropfelder’s 1st tour win. When she defeated Robin Albert in the stepladder finals, it marked the first time in WNDA history that two sisters bowled against each other.
- Richard Volpe won the RIDBA Winter Tournament series stop at Wickford Lanes in N. Kingstown on October 13-15.
- Brad Kron won the RIDBA Winter Tournament Series stop at Town Hall Lanes in Johnston on November 24-26.
- Member centers of the Duckpin Bowling Proprietors of America started becoming dual members of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America.

Jeffrey A. Wetzel Bowls 218 Game & 519 Set
Jeffrey A. Wetzel, a NDYA Major Division bowler (ages 16-21), rolled a 218 game and 519 set on Saturday, January 21, at Turner’s Dual Lanes in Hagerstown, MD. His other two games were 153 and 148. Morgan Crouse, a NDYA Junior Division bowler at AMF Dundalk (MD), bowled her highest set ever on Saturday, February 11, with a 442. Morgan had games of 161, 143, and 138.
